The Chicago Bears selected Walter Payton in the first round of the 1975 NFL draft as their fourth overall selection. The Bears have had several losing seasons since retiring legend Gale Sayers in 1972. Payton's first game was not particularly successful; in eight attempts, he failed to score a single yard.
